What does "hockey betting" mean in a UK context?

"Hockey betting" defaults to ice hockey rather than field hockey. Every UKGC-licensed sportsbook lists "hockey" under ice hockey markets — the NHL, the EIHL, the IIHF World Championship and selected European leagues. Field hockey markets exist during the Olympics and the FIH Pro League but appear separately under "Other sports". The puck line, moneyline and totals all assume the ice version.

Is it legal to bet on the NHL from the UK?

Yes. The NHL is freely available on every major UKGC-licensed sportsbook, and UK residents can deposit, stake and withdraw on NHL markets within the standard UKGC framework. Verify the sportsbook is UKGC-licensed before depositing, confirm your account is in your real name and address, and accept that the £150 financial-vulnerability threshold applies the same to NHL stakes as to football.

What time do NHL games start in the UK?

NHL puck drops cluster between 00:00 and 04:00 BST during the regular season. East Coast games typically drop at 00:00 or 00:30 BST; Central time-zone games at 01:00 or 02:00 BST; West Coast games at 03:00 or 03:30 BST. Overtime can push completion past 05:00. ITVX selects games with North American afternoon faceoffs where possible, the only consistent UK-friendly window in the schedule.

Is the EIHL listed alongside the NHL on the same UK sportsbook?

Yes — every major UKGC-licensed sportsbook lists the EIHL inside the same hockey tab as the NHL. The tree depth differs significantly: the NHL gets a full prop tree; the EIHL typically gets a three-way moneyline, a totals market and an outright winner. Player props on the EIHL are rare. The settlement default on EIHL moneyline is regulation time only on most books — a critical difference from the NHL default.

What makes the puck line specific to hockey?

Three things. First, the handicap is fixed at ±1.5 goals across virtually every market — football handicaps move in quarter-goal increments, basketball spreads sit at half-point steps anywhere from -2.5 to -14.5. Second, hockey scores low enough that the one-goal margin is the most common outcome, so a 1.5-goal handicap genuinely changes the implied probability. Third, the empty-net goal mechanic uniquely affects puck-line settlement in a way no other handicap market deals with.

How does the NHL handle integrity around betting markets?

The NHL runs an integrity monitoring operation that the commissioner has described publicly: "We monitor every minute of every game — both in terms of what's taking place in terms of play and what, if anything, is happening with the lines." The league works with specialist integrity-monitoring firms, major bookmakers and regulators across multiple jurisdictions. Hockey's pace and the number of players involved make manipulation of single-game outcomes operationally difficult.
